Before he met her, Richie had kind of wrapped his mind around dying young. Sure, he didn't want to, but he didn't see the point in fighting it. He stopped eating and stopped caring about how he looked. That's when he met her. Sylvie. She told him that she wasn't going to die, that the doctors were wrong.
